The Danish gaming company, IO Interactive is a well-established AAA independent game studio. They have been making games for over 20 years and have several successful games under their belt. Until now, the biggest one and well known around the world is HITMAN.

Gaming is a big business, bigger than movies! On top of this, the industry is evolving so fast and new games see the light all the time. So how do you stand out from the crowd and create a competitive advantage? IO Interactive might have seen the light and has taken a chance to develop their own version of Motion Matching - A new animation technology that uses AI.

A change of culture
With their own version of Motion Matching, IO Interactive aims to give players an even greater experience. The new animation technology allows a higher degree of visual fidelity and even more natural and convincing movement of characters. It will be a big change as eventually; it will not be the animations that have the power over the movements but instead the AI.

Funding that supports innovation

It takes significant effort, both manpower and budget to develop a new technology that can analyse the quality of movement. Therefore, to finalise the development of the new animation technology, IO Interactive needed funding to bring it to market.

IO Interactive already had a lot on their plate and therefore too busy to handle the entire application process to the Innovation Fund Denmark. Hence, they reached out to Nordic Innovators to get some help to write a successful application. It was a good match, IO Interactive got an InnoBooster grant in the beginning of 2020 – well done!
